Hurricane Maria killed at Least 4,645 People in Puerto Rico

A new study suggest that Hurricane Maria caused 4,645 deaths when it hit Puerto Rico, based on household surveys, according to Science News.

Maria, a Category 5 hurricane, hit Puerto Rico, a United States Caribbean territory on September 20th, 2017.

With another hurricane season rolling in, researchers stress using information to be better prepared for the next big storm.

“it will be critical to review how disaster-related deaths will be counted, in order to mobilize an appropriate response operation and account for the fate of those affected,”
