Hulu celebrated the highly anticipated release of Dan Trachtenberg’s ‘Prey’ which offered a brand new take on the iconic Predator franchise, while also, hopefully, breathing life into a franchise that has suffered due to some under-whelming entries.
Dropping this week, the film told the story of: “A skilled Comanche warrior protects her tribe from a highly evolved alien predator that hunts humans for sport, fighting against wilderness, dangerous colonisers and this mysterious creature to keep her people safe.”
Starring Amber Midthunder, Dane DiLiegro, Dakota Beavers, Michelle Thrush, Stefany Mathias and Julian Black Antelope, the film brought the Predator story back in time, to the year 1719, in a much different setting than any other Predator film.
This played well, as it told a completely unique story, gave a fresh look at the hunting of both the Predator and those he was hunting, and a completely different approach to the “kill”, as the Predator was no longer just hunting human prey, but battling it out with a bear, a wolf, and others.
It was a complete departure from the jungle-based classic of the original Predator, and, in my opinion, the best Predator sequel ‘Predators’ and breathed life into a franchise that was left on life support following the epic dud that Shane Black delivered with 2018’s ‘The Predator’.
‘Prey’ is every bit the primal adrenaline shot that fans were hoping for as the hype was building. While there are some flaws with the film, they’re not anything that anchors down what is definitely etched as one of the best films in the franchise. While the original will always reign supreme, Prey has entered the conversation with ‘Predators’ for one of the best sequels in a starving franchise that finally got fed some good meat.
